In two main occasions, Barak Obama proved a lack of a political will to address the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and gave priority to his interest as a candidate for the presidency for a second term over the interest of peace in the Middle East.
The first occasion was a few days ago in his speech to the IBAC which has a prominent Zionist influence in the United States.
Last year he delivered a similar speech before IBAC in which he was dominantly interested in the Middle East. He clearly pointed out that the Israeli settlement formed a main obstacle for Peace, and called on the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu to take bold positions and stop the settlements activities and resume the negotiations with the Palestinians.
Obama was aware that these words may anger some of the parties of the Jewish lobby in the United States, but he took a strong position when he insisted on the necessity of halting the Israeli settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
This year Obama focused in his speech on the Iranian nuclear program, considering it the greatest threat on the peace in the Middle East, stressing on guaranteeing the security of Israel and ignoring that the Israeli army is still occupying the Palestinian land, and that it has more than 200 nuclear warheads, which really threaten the peace on the Middle East. It was clear that Obama, in his speech, was approaching to the Jewish lobby and trying to overpass his disagreements with Israel. He also tried to present the US as the defender that protects Israel. What Obama did was only for the sake of gaining the financial and media support of the Jewish lobby which has an overwhelming influence on the American public opinion.
The second occasion was Obama's meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Last year, Obama met Netanyahu. The atmosphere was tense between them, because the United States was insisting on halting the Israeli settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, while Israel rejected to stop the settlements activities.
Obama spoke frankly with Netanyahu and called on abiding by the relevant UN resolutions of settlement activities. However, this year Obama forgot the Palestinian issue and settlement. He also turned a blind eye that there is a Palestinian people living under the Israeli occupation and that the international laws and the charter of the United Nations state that this occupation must leave and give the opportunity for the Palestinians to live at peace on their territories under the flag of their sovereign independent state on the borders of 4 June 1967 with Jerusalem its capital.
Obama overcame all the points of disagreement with Netanyahu and presented Israel to the public as a state vulnerable to the Iranian nuclear threat, although it is Israel that possesses the nuclear weapon and Iran does not have this weapon.
Obama needs to regain credibility with himself, and with the Arab and Islamic peoples. He has to reintroduce the Palestinian file as the first file of the Arab and Islamic countries. As for the Iranian threat, we find it greatly exaggerated, because the only reason that drives the Arab and Islamic countries to arm themselves is the risk of the continuous Israeli aggression on the occupied Palestinian, Lebanese and Syrian territories. It is Israel that is threatening to attack Iran now. What does the world want from Tehran to do while it is receiving threats from the United States and Israel than to provide itself with the weapon that protects its people from the American and Israeli threats?
